I have adored Jacqueline Wilson from the moment I was able to read. One year, after reading Double Act my best friend and I decided to dress up as Ruby & Garnet for world book day – I was about a foot taller and we looked nothing alike but to us we were the twins. We were lucky enough to meet Jacqueline that day who came to do a talk at our school and she said she thought we looked great.
When I saw that Double Act was playing at the polka theatre I was so excited and booked my daughter and I a spot straight away…and as luck would have it there was an after show chat with the legend herself that day.
We took our seats and within a few minutes I was in fits of laughter, I won’t ruin it for you but all I will say is sheep! When I heard that line nostalgia raced through me and I remembered being a young girl and finding it just as hilarious as I did reading it for the first time.
The whole cast were wonderful and very adaptable as there were only six of them all in all. It was lovely to see my daughter enjoying the play just as much as I was. It doesn’t matter what age you are – it is fun for all the family.
Watching the play as an adult made me realise how many emotions the book actually does make you feel. As funny as it was there are also some very sad parts that I probably didn’t fully understand when I was younger, but I have to admit I welled up a few times.
The play is on until the 5th August and the ticket prices are very reasonable – if you get a chance to go, you won’t regret it! It was a wonderful way to spend an afternoon and the theatre itself has a lot to keep the children busy before and after shows with a cafe, reading corner, shop and outside play area.
I’ll pop the website link below and I look forward to going to see many more shows at the polka theatre with my babies.
